The National Awareness and Early Diagnosis Initiative - NAEDI

NAEDI is an important national programme of work designed to raise the awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer and encourage people to visit their doctor (GP) as soon as possible if they have symptoms.

Evidence clearly shows that early diagnosis vastly improves the chances of successfully treating many cancers. ‘Early diagnosis saves lives’.
Improving Outcomes: A Strategy for Cancer (IOSC), published in January 2011, noted that, despite improvements in the treatment and survival of cancer in recent decades, outcomes in England remain poor compared with similar countries.

Starting in 2010 the strategy outlines a call to action to save 5,000 lives a year, every year up to 2015 through early diagnosis and awareness – which will bring us in line with the European average.

Early Diagnosis Saves Lives (bowel and lung cancer)
Thames Valley Cancer Network (TVCN) was one of the first areas to deliver a pilot campaign for bowel and lung cancer.  We managed the campaign for all six PCTs across the network to the 2.6million population.

Saving 5,000 lives – Cancer Networks Supporting Primary Care
TVCN was awarded further funding in August 2011 to carry out a more detailed project directly with GPs and primary care professionals.  This project aims specifically to build links between clinical networks and primary care towards the Saving 5,000 lives target and reduce the number of cancers diagnosed through emergency routes.

Breast Cancer Awareness in Women over 70
TVCN helped NHS Berkshire [PCT Cluster] bid for funding and project managed a 10 week pilot campaign to raise awareness of the symptoms of breast cancer in women over 70.

National Be Clear on Cancer campaigns

We supported the Department of Health and Strategic Health Authority to make sure both primary and secondary healthcare professionals and, of course, the public had the information they needed for the first major national campaigns.

Be Clear on Bowel Cancer ran from January to March 2012
Be Clear on Lung Cancer runs from May to June 2012

There will be more opportunities for funding and several future campaigns planned both locally, regionally and nationally and we’ll keep you up to date on this site.
