Supporting Primary Care - introduction

Helping local GPs save lives

The Thames Valley Cancer Network is committed to increasing awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer and aiding front-line, clinical and health professionals in early diagnosis.

Continuing our active involvement in a range of NAEDI-funded projects, we have engaged with 48 practices in Oxfordshire and Berkshire to work with us on this Primary Care-specific project.

The project is structured with a mix of in practice audit and sharing of learning points with attendance at workshops to share the learning, pathway redesign and gain a greater understanding of commissioning cancer services and Practice Cancer Profiles.

At the end of the project practices are expected to;

  • Complete a two phase audit of selected 2ww referrals
  • Complete a SEA audit of emergency Cancer diagnoses
  • Complte a Plan in response to their Practice Cancer Profile
  • Attend three workshops
  • Understand their local pathways and the costs associated with them

Each o f the 28 Cancer Networks in England has received Department of Health funding for projects to support primary care. All projects run along the same timeframe and will be part of an external evaluation led by Greg Rubin Professor of General Practice from the University of Durham and the National Cancer Action Team with a final report to be published in November 2012.

You can read full details of the project in the Project Guide.

Ongoing reports and findings will also be published on this site.
